Save water, and have a beautiful yard

In the Western U.S., water is a scarce resource. We are becoming increasingly aware of this in our daily lives and our community. As we experience first-hand the changing climate in the Yampa Valley, we need to be ready to adapt. Water conservation practices can help us prepare for this new normal, while enjoying gardens that are beautiful and easier to manage.

Garden In A Box

DIY garden kits from Resource Central

Western Resilience Center has teamed up with City of Steamboat Springs, Mount Werner Water and Sanitation District and Resource Central to bring the Garden In A Box program to the Yampa Valley. These do-it-yourself kits include quart-sized perennial plants, plant-by-number maps, seasonal maintenance suggestions, and watering schedule recommendations. On average, homeowners and residents can expect to save 5,000 gallons of water per growing season with each Garden in a Box planting compared to a traditional grass lawn.

  • Sales for 2026 are finished in our region. Kits will go on sale again in spring 2027!
